Dog Days

My granddaughter, age 10, has been obsessed with dogs for a long time. Her parents won't let her have one - mainly because her younger brother is allergic to dogs. Or at least, that's what they tell her. I guess one excuse is as good as another.

Anyway, she's been working on grandma and grandpa to get a dog. Just about every time we see her over the past few years, she brings it up. She has all kinds of 10 year old reasoning why it would be a great idea. She's said that it would actually be her dog, but it would live with us.

She was here for a visit this weekend. Not to be deterred, she brought up the subject again while on a long walk with grandpa. It seems that now grandpa may be warming up to the idea. Since she seems to have grandpa on her side, now she's working on grandma.

Her latest efforts included the following ideas:

1. She would help pay for the dog. She says she has $35 and that dogs from the Humane Society only cost $100 and have all their shots, plus a free leash.
2. She says we need to have her go along to pick out the dog because we have to know if it likes children. She thinks that she would pick what kind of dog we get. But I told her since the dog would be living at my house and I would be the primary caregiver, I'd have the final say.
3. She said the dog could come stay at her house when grandma and grandpa need to go out of town and have someone take care of the dog. (I'm afraid her parents would veto this idea). Or...she suggested that Annie and Travis could come and take care of the dog when we are gone.
4. The dog would be so happy when she came to visit and would want to sleep with her. She would come and visit us A LOT more.
5. Finally, she said that you have to do your homework about a dog to be sure you know all about it.
6. She also said that grandpa and grandma need to talk about it.

This young lady is determined. So I gave her a homework assignment. I told her she had to do a report on the kinds of dogs she thought would be a good choice....pictures and all. Grandma and grandpa will talk about it.

Then we'll see.....

What have I gotten myself into???

It Ain't Here

There's an article today on the MSN home page naming the #1 city to live in the good old USA. It's not my home town. But it is my brother's...Charlotte, North Carolina.

Not done yet...

This is what happens when attorneys get involved in what is an other wise simple solution.

Since the mediation with our neighbors, the Nimbys, Kent has been able to work out what seems to be a reasonable solution about our trees and need for screening and the Nimbys desire for views. We've agreed to remove a few, very small trees and the Nimbys have agreed to plant additional yews on their side of the fence. So from my point of view, we should both just get out our shovels and start removing trees and planting yews and be done with it.

But, oh no. The attorneys involved need written agreements full of legal ease, stipulations, and conditions. Geez, can't we just move on and be done with all this trees and views business??? I guess these attorneys haven't quite paid for their cabin, boat, or European vacation.

Aidanism III

Yesterday, my almost 3 grandson was over for a little while. During lunch, I was eating some of those guacamole flavored tortilla chips. Aidan was curious about the green color and asked what they were. I said "Guacamole chips. Can you say guacamole chips?" Aidan said "Flockamole chips."

Aidan can also count to ten and tell you how old he is. ..two and a half. If you want to be forever young, ask Aidan how old you are. He'll tell you that you are three and a half.

Mother's Day 2008

A Mother's Thoughts on Mother's Day:

It's all over - even the shouting. My kids have packed up their kids and headed home. The two youngest, who are now roommates in their own apartment, are gone as well. Some how, I feel a little like my mother in law must have felt on the Sunday evenings after all of her kids left with all of their kids. We had alot of Sunday evenings at Grandma Buies. And now, I'm the Grandma Buie for my grandchildren.

Last year, a new Mother's Day tradition was started by the kids...."Fiesta de Madre". Last year, it was tacos, guacamole, salsa, dip, fruit and a pinata. It was a big success. This year there was no pinata. The main organizers of last year's event spent yesterday moving into their apartment. They didn't have time to hunt down a pinata. Maybe next year.

The last three Mother's Days have been a little different. In 2006, my youngest daughter graduated from college. It was the best Mother's Day present. In 2007 and 2008, we have been attending a young single adult ward so we've missed out on the traditional Mother's Day songs from the Primary kids and the potted plant given out in Sacrament meeting. Next year, I think I'll have to at least go to Annie's ward to see/hear Aidan sing in his first Mother's Day songs in Sacrament meeting.

For Mother's Day gifts, I got a basket of some of my favorite things from Annie, Kelly and Patrick. I know that they all know about my love for chocolate and mint, particularly York Peppermint Patties. But I was surprised that at least one of them knew about my love of Boston Baked Beans. Rachelle, Rob and kids gave me some shampoo, conditioner and body cream in my favorite scent from Bath and Body Works. Patrick commented that his new girlfriend also loves the same scent. He says it's a little weird that his girlfriend smells like his mother.

Conor and Katie weren't with us this year. It's been one week since their daughter, Leila, was born. They're exhausted from the newborn-ness and wanted to spend the day at home. We missed them. We only have about a month or so to get to know Leila and hang out with Chas as their parents will be moving to Denver. Conor has been accepted to law school in Denver. Congratulations, Conor!

It's been a nice day. I've been blessed with some great kids who have become wonderful adults.

My fourth granddaughter and seven grandchild arrived today by scheduled C-Section. Mom and baby are doing well. Her older brother is still trying to figure exactly what she is. He was making monkey noises at her today.

Check It Out

I while ago I included a link to my daughter's blog. But at the time, it was private. She's made it public. So go check out her photography.
